Winter Tips for Your Pup

  • Dogs’ feet, like ours in the winter time, dry out and get chapped and cracked.  You can get some hoof creme from a feed store to help relieve some pain and cracking by putting some on at night (calmly) while they are resting.  This will help, especially if you jog with your dog.
  • During the winter months dogs’ coats will change; some get a great undercoat and are well insulated.  The areas to be aware of  might be where matted hair regularly occurs, allergy areas, knots under the ears, and where they might have chewed their skin due to winter skin dryness.  A fish oil pill pierced with a pin and squirted on their food helps keep the skin moisturized and keeps the coat nice and healthy.
  • Some short-haired dogs will not be able to tolerate the cold, but that does not mean they can’t get exercise or have their regular walks or jogs with the family.  There are inexpensive fleece jackets on Amazon that are also water proof.  Get one that is reversible.  We have found a good quality coat will last quite awhile.
