Sonja Thiels

Manager of Atlanta Dog Trainer Pet Resort/Agility Trainer/Aggression Management Rehabilitator

Sonja Theils with three cute doggies.

Sonja has been with Atlanta Dog Trainer for some time and we are proud to have her manage our new project, The Pet Resort in Cumming. We look for many wonderful years ahead for this growing partnership.

Sonja is the Board and Train Department Director and Head Trainer for all the dogs that come into our pet resort board and train program. Sonja has excellent dog training skills and she has a natural talent for reading dog language. She is constantly striving to continue her education through, seminars, workshop and volunteering for any project she may learn or assist.

Sonja has an inborn love for all animals but especially dogs and horses. She has been studying dog behavior and behavior modification for 15 years and horses for 35 years. She is a graduate of Animal Behavior College and is a certified behavior modification and obedience training specialist. Sonja is an obedience trainer and aggression management rehabilitator. Sonja is also a Canine Good Citizen Evaluator. She holds master level titles in agility with her dogs Neige (retired) and Alaia, and is training Micah, her German Shepherd, as her 3rd agility competition dog. Sonja also does sheep herding with Maggie Rose her Border collie and Rally with Harry the Terror.

Sonja teaches agility classes and they are such a part of her client’s lives now we have the advanced class run continuously for almost 4 years due to her warm and nurturing style. She is very involved and all of her level classes are constantly meeting at agility trials as a group of friends and competitors. Sonja will help anyone whether they join a class for fun or are looking for a sport to continue with their dog. Her amazing teaching skills will captivate even the most novice owners and their dogs to want more…

She has broad knowledge working with a diversity of dogs in a variety of situations. She has been a foster mom for various rescue groups in Atlanta. Sonja also donates her time to help abused and neglected dogs. She volunteers her training services to help shelter dogs so they can be placed in good homes.

Sonja lives with her 5 dogs Neige, Alaia, Harry, Maggie Rose and Micah.

Dogs have given us their absolute all. We are the center of their universe. We are the focus of their love and faith and trust. They serve us in return for scraps. It is without a doubt the best deal man has ever made.

Sonja is not just a good Agility teacher. She is an amazing observer. She knows what to watch for in my dog and me when we are working together. She has a way of correcting that is always positive – never negative. Her explanations are always clear and corrections right on the money. Praise is a big part of her technique – but not given when not earned. AND she’s fun!

I have learned more about me and my communication skills and body language and my dog during these last 2 1/2 years than I thought possible. I drive an hour each way to class every week and would not consider finding a “more convenient” class. Sonja is the best!

B. Brown

For the past two years Ballys, my lab/golden mix, and I have taken agility classes from Sonja Thiels. Sonja is a wonderful, very knowledgeable and experienced instructor who makes the classes fun, challenging and very interesting. She has a great personality and easily approachable and doesn’t mind my questions. I especially appreciate her ability “to read” Ballys when he is doing well in class and when he becomes confused and most importantly when Ballys has had enough and is tired. She also understands Ballys’ “zoomies” at the beginning of class as a way for him to settle into the course she has constructed. Sonja also works hard to help me understand how important my body position is so that Ballys can easily understand where he should be on the course and what he should do next. Sonja gives herself totally to the class and all the participants all of which makes for a fabulous class.

B. Haake

I have been a client of Atlanta Dog Trainer and Sonja for over a year now. Sonja is a fantastic agility instructor, always keeping the best interest of both the dog and the owner in mind. Her warm, energetic personality created an immediate bond with my dog, Beau. It is as if from the start she saw him as a complete picture. What he wasn’t, and what he was. Her interactions with Beau, and her instructions for me are always geared towards bringing out the best in Beau, highlighting what he is capable of.

Sonja knows how to accentuate and focus on what a dog is doing right. She above all wants to keep the dog in a positive mindset, so the dog himself feels he is making progress and hangs “in the game,” so to speak, with both joy and enthusiasm. She is sensitive to when a dog has given all he is capable of on a given day, and wants him well taken care of mentally and physically, even if it means his stopping for the day, regardless of what time it is, or where other classmates are in their progress with regards to the class agenda. For Beau, sensitive to high temperatures in summer heat, sometimes this means he is finished for the day after the success of only a couple of runs. Sonja knows how to read his body language, and she never fails to do what is right for him.

At the end of our weekly class, dogs and humans both feel a sense of accomplishment and pleasure. No one wants to leave the course area. This is due to Sonja’s talent, personable disposition and great sense of humor, all of which foster a community of support and encouragement amongst participants. I highly recommend her classes to anyone wanting a great class experience with their dog, where your bond grows deeper and deeper as the classes progress.

Trish Carpenter

Behavioral and Obedience Trainer, Aggression Management Co-Trainer

Trish Carpenter has spent the past 10 years as a tireless animal advocate through several rescue organizations, primarily Labrador Friends of the South. She has worked with dozens of dogs in order to help them transition from a shelter environment into a stable family life. Her specialty has been socializing dogs into life as family members, and she & her husband have fostered over 90 dogs. Trish has also worked closely with local animal shelters in order to temperament-test dogs to assess which ones are good candidates for adoption. She is experienced in severe & hard to manage behavioral issues, such as separation anxiety, different types of aggression, fear- based behaviors, & behavioral problems that are the result of little or no socialization in the puppies’ crucial learning stages.

Trish works with owners and their dogs in private or in-home lessons, for either behavioral issues or basic obedience. She is the Aggression Management Co-trainer along with Ms. Aga, & works with hard to define, severe aggression cases & other dangerous behaviors that require the skills to be able to manage aggressive dogs. Trish also works with autistic individuals in order to assist them in learning how to care for their own companion dog, as well as coordinating the Hands for Hire program where adults with disabilities learn to train and care for dogs. She participates with Ms. Aga in her lectures on Behavioral Psychology at Georgia State University, and she is responsible for Atlanta Dog Trainer's puppy classes. Trish is also a Certified Canine Good Citizen Evaluator. She will continue her efforts with rescue groups, including evaluations & assessments of shelter dogs, as well as follow-up training for those who are adopted.

“He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.” – Unknown

Hi Trish,

I just wanted you to know what information you gave us and worked with us on was very good and successful. I think you made us look at ourselves and realize that we needed to be more positive. We were getting so angry at them. The positive reinforcement has worked like a charm.

Molly is running up to her bed without us running after her all over the house at night. She is listening much better. DaVinci is better, as well. He is listening when we ask him to sit, stay, down and off. So we are progressing. He still is so young and full of energy but he is coming along. Jack and DaVinci are not in love but they are getting along better and can move in the same space now and are both living together. We are watching very closely for triggers. You made us aware of that also.

I have been thinking about you and wanted to let you know what was happening and to thank you.

Chloe “no Bite!” That is how I spent my days. Her aggression was only towards me and my two small children. The minute my husband walked out the door, it was game on for her. Our sweet spoiled boxer puppy had figured out that she was the queen and we were there to serve her. Desperate for help, I called Trish at the Allanta Dog Trainer and she came right out. Chloe made sure that Trish saw who was the boss immediately growling and snapping when she did not get her way. For an hour Trish went through what was going to have to happen for me to take back the control in the house. I was skeptical and wrote it all down: put up the toys; food; stopped spoiling her with attention; stopped yelling; and, approached her in a calm way only awarding her for being good. She fought me at first; but, in a week was doing EVERYTHING I said and no growling or biting every time I walked by or at the kids. “Is this my dog?” Even the neighbors were amazed. I also put her in the doggy day camp where she has been learning socialization with the other dogs and it wears her out&ndahs;she LOVES it! Trish and her husband Rick could not be more friendly and helpful–they are so good to Chloe and my family. Every penny I spent with them has been worth it 120% because I now have the dog that I always wanted thanks to Trish and Atlanta Dog Trainer. We will continue to go there–they have changed our lives.

Thank you!

Hi Susie,

I have had my two standard poodles (Jake and Bella) enrolled in Trish’s 3:30PM (Sunday) Level 1 Obedience for the past 6 weeks. We “graduated” today, and I am interested in signing Bella, my younger poodle, up for Level 2. Another Sunday class would be great. Do you know when the next class might start? By the way, Trish is great; an excellent and very patient, knowledgeable teacher. My poodles and I have enjoyed the class.

Thanks again,

Kathy Bergwall

Rick Carpenter

Canine Behavoir and Training Specialist

I have been involved with dog rescue and dog training for almost seven years and I have been a part of Atlanta Dog Trainer for two years.

My wife Trish and I have fostered over 90 dogs over a span of seven years with gratifying results; as they have been rescued from a shelter and paired up with new owners. Our job has been to take these dogs from the instability of their previous life and socialize them enough to go into their forever home.

I started as a Board and Train trainer for Atlanta Dog Trainer and have branched into doing private lessons at our Freemanville location as well as in-home, private sessions. Additionally, I teach group classes throughout the year, and am continuing to broaden my experience by attending “Nose Workshops,” as well as other educational seminars. I will receive my Canine Good Citizen Evaluator certification soon as well.

I have a particular interest in the more willful breeds such as the “bully” breed dogs. Their particular plight is always a challenge but shaping them with the correct training is rewarding. I am also involved with a group of mentally challenged individuals who are learning to care for and train dogs at “Hands For Hire.” As part of my responsibilities to this group during their weekly “dog club,” I introduce dogs of various breeds and personalities in order to educate the clients in the proper care and handling of all dogs.

With dogs being so much a part of our lives, it is its own reward to see a happier dog and a happier family through our training.

Crystal Turner

Canine Behavoir and Training Specialist

Crystal Turner

Crystal Turner became a part of our team in July at our Freemanville Road location as a daycare associate and boarding manager. Originally from Raleigh, North Carolina, she started pet-sitting and dog walking at a young age. She worked at a Daycare/Boarding facility in East Atlanta before joining our team and she brought her experience dealing with rescue/foster dogs, daycare and boarding, and managing aggressive dogs. Crystal is constantly trying to learn as much as she can about canine behavior, aggression management and obedience training. She has rescued multiple dogs, and is the proud mama of Boo, a rescued Cockapoo, and Cubby, a rescued Border Collie. Crystal spends her spare time reading and working on obedience with her dogs.

Crystal is blessed to be able to spend her time doing what she loves and to be surrounded by dogs on a daily basis. She is extremely excited at any opportunity to learn more about dog behavior and psychology, and looks forward to continually adding her skills into the mix as well as learning new training methods at Atlanta Dog Trainer.

Best Doggy Daycare!I have used Atlanta Dog Trainer several times over the past few months to board our puppy. Crystal takes great care of Daisy and I highly recommend them!

Jane E.

My puppy did obedience training while boarding for 2 weeks with Crystal. When I picked him up, he knew basic commands and was great on a leash. Most importantly, Crystal is extremely kind and caring. She really loves animals. I highly recommend using Atlanta Dog Trainer!

Sandi C.

Our puppy, Chase, just completed his board and train obedience training with Crystal and we couldn’t be happier! All of his puppy problems (mouthing, jumping) have been eliminated and he came home happy and healthy and trained on basic commands. Couldn’t be happier with Atlanta Dog Trainer!

Ji is the most recent trainer to join the Atlanta Dog Trainer team, having apprenticed with Susie Aga through the Atlanta Dog Trainer Academy.

Ji really enjoys working with different Rescue Organizations to rehabilitate dogs that need a little guidance to show their charming characteristics.and can often be found around town with his furry companion Nina walking in Piedmont Park, Leita Thompson Dog Park, Parkgrounds, Chattahoochee River Parks, or hiking and camping in North Georgia’s mountains. Ji believes that a dog that can go anywhere will go everywhere with it’s human companion

Ji Kim is our Atlanta Dog Trainer Pet Resort Obedience and Behavioral Trainer. He works with our Board and Train clients, group and private lessons and in-home.

I took a medium sized, very active female dog to Ji Kim, a trainer at Atlanta Dog Trainer. She is 9 mos old, and never had been leash trained. Ji was very patient with her, and when I picked her up at the end of her stay she was walking happily and reliably on a leash. The entire staff was kind, considerate, and professional. A very positive experience in every way.

Diane Culpepper

Diane was born and raised in Georgia. She served in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged in 2003 after having served just under 20 years. Because of her military service, she traveled the world and lived all over the United States. She taught survival techniques and with this training she learned animal behavior. She learned how to track animals and how animals think. It was having this training that led her to fulfill a career that she had dreamed of as a child. Dogs have always been a part of her life and when she was young she wanted to be a Veterinarian. As she grew older the urge to be a veterinarian was replaced by the desire to work with dogs as a trainer or as a behavior specialist.

She moved to this area and started working at Atlanta Dog Trainer in April of 2011. As a daycare associate at our Freemanville location and also as a kennel technician at our Pet Resort, she studied the dogs and learned dog language. Because of her fascination with dog behavior, she is always trying to learn more by attending seminars, workshops, and helping fellow trainers with group classes and other events. She works closely with local rescue organizations to train their dogs to become better candidates for adoptions. She works with older dogs with behavior issues and young and old dogs alike with housebreaking issues. She is currently studying aggressive dog behavior. She has been apprenticing under Susie Aga with the Atlanta Dog Trainer Academy. She is currently a Board and Train trainer and also conducts private and in-home lessons. She currently lives with her Cattle dog, Aussie. Her other hobbies include genealogy, paranormal investigations, and she is an avid sports fan.
